Welcome to our brand new "Mastering Lab" category. Since we are rarely satisfied with how things sound anymore, we thought we'd take a crack at fixing some of the sonic tragedies we hear more often than we'd like to. We tested with two Al Jarreau albums and the results were popular enough to make this a permanent fixture here.
Every so often, we stumble upon an album full of great music that never got a "fair shake" in the digital domain. We'll take pity on it, digitally remaster from the CD, and "re-release" here for download. We'll make every effort to improve upon the sound you're used to without using horrible techniques like "compressing" or the ever-popular "band limiting" and "hiss reduction". These processes degrade and audio and, well, we just can't bring ourselves to use them.
In order to do this, 99% of the albums we'll offer here will be "out-of-print". As is the case all over the site, we have no interest in violating active copyright. We love great music and simply want to make it shine where possible. There will be exceptions but those will be
quite few and far between.
If you have something you have a "love/hate" relationship with (love the songs/hate the sound), simply ask for it in "The Wish List". If we don't have it, we'll ask you for it. The only way we can properly remaster is for you to submit ".wav" files of the entire album to us. This can be done through
Yousendit. This service is incredibly easy to use and it's free. You upload the tracks, we download them and remaster, and then re-upload on our server here.
We can accept songs that come from vinyl or from CD. Again, the CD
must be out-of-print (many are these days). If it is "in-print", we'll gently inform you that it is. Sometimes, it can be hard to tell what's "in-print" and what's not. The best way to check is to go to our affililate,
Tower Records. Since they don't offer "used" product like Amazon does, your results will be more conclusive and less confusing. Just type in the name of the artist and look for the album. If you don't find it, it's "out-of-print". If you do, we can't work on it.
Finally, we ask that you not share our download location with anyone else off-site.
Please do not post links to the sound files anywhere else. The files will always be rather large and if you link to them on some other forum, the server on which the files reside will likely go down due to overload. If we limit participation to those on this forum only, the server will always be available. We appreciate your cooperation.
Enjoy!
